Rachel offered a thin smile, even though she thought it might break her face. 'You're right,' she said. 'It does. It's definitely worse than it used to be.'

Redmond nodded. He chewed his way through his food with grim determination. 'I haven't seen you for a long while,' he said.

Rachel stirred her food but she was already losing interest in it. She wondered if she might be able to pick up something better in the Old Quarter. She might have to pay a high price for it, but she was a commander now. She could afford a little indulgence once in a while. An image of an orange appeared in her mind. How long had been since she had eaten one? She couldn't remember.
